Best Recovery Exercises for Cyclists
Recovery exercises focus on improving mobility, reducing soreness, and enhancing blood flow after a ride.
1. Foam Rolling
- Focus on the quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves, and IT bands.
- Spend about 1–2 minutes per muscle group.
- Helps reduce muscle tightness and improve blood flow.
2. Dynamic Mobility Exercises
- Leg Swings: Stand on one leg and swing the other forward and backward, then side to side. Improves hip mobility.
- Cat-Cow Stretch: On hands and knees, alternate between arching your back (cow) and rounding it (cat). Loosens up the spine.
- Hip Bridges: Lie on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor, and lift your hips. Activates glutes and stretches hip flexors.
3. Low-Impact Cardio
- A light walk, swim, or spin on a stationary bike at low intensity for 10–15 minutes. This promotes blood flow to tired muscles.
4. Yoga Poses
- Child’s Pose: Stretches the lower back and hips.
- Downward Dog: Opens up the calves, hamstrings, and back.
- Pigeon Pose: Deeply stretches the hips and glutes.
5. Strength and Core Work (For Active Recovery Days)
- Planks and Side Planks: Strengthen your core, which supports proper cycling posture.
- Lunges or Bodyweight Squats: Help balance and strengthen cycling-specific muscles.
